How to Calculate Physical Presence for Canadian Citizenship Application
Published by: Can X Global Solutions Inc.

One of the most important requirements when applying for Canadian citizenship is proving that you have been physically present in Canada for a certain number of days. Miscalculating this can lead to delays, refusals, or returned applications. That’s why understanding how to accurately calculate your physical presence is crucial before submitting your citizenship application.
In this blog, we explain what counts toward physical presence, how to calculate the number of days, and what tools and documents can help you prepare a strong and complete application.
What Is the Physical Presence Requirement?
To be eligible for Canadian citizenship, most adult applicants must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) within the five years immediately before the date of their application.
You can use a combination of:
-
- Time spent in Canada as a permanent resident
- Some time spent as a temporary resident or protected person before becoming a PR
- Time spent outside Canada in very limited circumstances (e.g. accompanying a Canadian citizen abroad)
- Time spent in Canada as a permanent resident
Who Needs to Meet the Physical Presence Requirement?
All adult applicants aged 18 to 54 applying for Canadian citizenship must meet the physical presence requirement. This applies whether you are applying alone or with family members.
Minors applying with a parent, or under special provisions, may be exempt from this requirement, depending on their situation.
How to Calculate the 1,095 Days
The 1,095 days must fall within the five-year period immediately before you apply. Here’s how to calculate:
Step 1: Determine Your 5-Year Eligibility Period
Count backward five years from the date you plan to apply for citizenship. Only time within this window will count.
Step 2: Count Time as a Permanent Resident
Each day physically present in Canada after becoming a PR counts as 1 full day.
Step 3: Count Time Before Becoming a PR (if applicable)
You can count time spent in Canada as:
-
- A temporary resident (visitor, student, worker) or
- A protected person
- A temporary resident (visitor, student, worker) or
Each day in Canada during this time counts as half a day, up to a maximum of 365 days.
This means you can only use up to two years (730 days) of temporary status time to contribute to a maximum of 365 full days toward your 1,095-day requirement.
Step 4: Exclude Days Outside Canada
Any full days spent outside Canada during the five-year period do not count toward your physical presence total. If you left the country for vacations, work, or family visits, those days must be subtracted.
Example Calculation
Let’s say you are applying for citizenship on January 1, 2025.
Your five-year window runs from January 1, 2020 to January 1, 2025.
-
- You became a permanent resident on January 1, 2022
- You lived in Canada as a temporary worker from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2021
- You have taken 60 days of vacation outside Canada during your PR period
- You became a permanent resident on January 1, 2022
Your calculation would be:
-
- Time as temporary resident: 730 days × 0.5 = 365 days
- Time as permanent resident: 730 days (Jan 1, 2022 to Dec 31, 2023)
- Subtract 60 days away: 730 – 60 = 670 days
- Time as temporary resident: 730 days × 0.5 = 365 days
Total: 365 (temporary) + 670 (PR) = 1,035 days
This applicant would need to wait about 2 more months to reach 1,095 days.
