I Got a Canadian Job Offer From India. What Do I Do Next?

Published by: Can X Global Solutions Inc.

A Canadian employer just offered you a job. Maybe you applied online, maybe a recruiter reached out, maybe you have a contact there who made the introduction. However it happened, the offer is real and now the question is: what comes next?

Getting a job offer from Canada is a big deal. It is one of the most direct paths to a Canadian work permit, and in many cases it also significantly boosts your chances of permanent residency down the line. But the process from offer to actually working in Canada involves several steps, and understanding them upfront will save you a lot of confusion.

1

Step 1: Confirm What Kind of Work Permit the Offer Supports

Not all Canadian job offers automatically qualify you for a work permit. The type of work permit you can get depends largely on whether the employer needs to go through the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) process or whether the offer qualifies for an LMIA exemption.

An LMIA is a document that Canadian employers must typically obtain from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) before they can hire a foreign worker. It demonstrates that the employer tried to find a Canadian citizen or permanent resident for the role first and could not.

However, many job offers qualify for LMIA exemptions. Common exemptions include roles covered under international trade agreements such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), intracompany transfers, and certain specialized roles. Your employer or their HR team should be able to tell you whether they are pursuing an LMIA or whether the role is LMIA-exempt.

2

Step 2: Understand the LMIA Process If It Applies

If your employer needs to obtain an LMIA, that happens before your work permit application. The employer applies to ESDC and, if approved, receives a positive LMIA document. You then use that document as part of your work permit application.

LMIA processing times have varied significantly in recent years. Standard LMIAs can take several months. Your employer’s timeline for having you on the ground is directly affected by this, which is why many employers start this process as soon as they know they want to hire internationally.

3

Step 3: Submit Your Work Permit Application

Once the LMIA is in place (or if the role is LMIA-exempt), you submit your work permit application online through IRCC. You will need your valid passport, the job offer letter or LMIA copy, proof of your qualifications for the role, and evidence that you intend to leave Canada when your permit expires (this is assessed differently for different cases).

As an Indian citizen, you will also need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) alongside your work permit unless you hold a valid Canadian visa already. Indian passport holders are not visa-exempt when entering Canada by air.

4

Step 4: Biometrics

Most applicants from India are required to provide biometrics (fingerprints and a photograph) as part of the application. You can do this at a designated Visa Application Centre (VAC) in India. Biometrics are valid for ten years, so if you have provided them for a previous Canadian application, you may not need to do this again.

How Long Does the Process Take?

Processing times vary, but here is a realistic picture for applicants from India. If an LMIA is required and your employer has not yet applied for one, add several months to your timeline before the work permit application even starts. The work permit application itself currently takes approximately two to four months in most cases. Biometrics can be scheduled quickly at most VACs, typically within a week or two of the request.

Total timeline from job offer to arriving in Canada with a valid work permit typically ranges from three to eight months depending on whether an LMIA is required and how quickly each step moves. Setting realistic expectations with your employer about this timeline is important.

Does a Canadian Job Offer Help With Permanent Residency?

Yes, significantly. A valid job offer from a Canadian employer adds points to your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score in the Express Entry pool. The number of points depends on whether the offer is in a senior or specialized role (NOC TEER 0 or 1 versus other categories). A qualifying job offer can add 50 or 200 points to your score, which can be the difference between receiving an Invitation to Apply and sitting in the pool indefinitely.

Frequently Asked Questions

My employer says they will sponsor my work permit. What does that actually mean?

When an employer says they will sponsor your work permit, it typically means they are taking responsibility for the LMIA application (if required) and supporting your work permit application with the necessary documents. It does not mean they are paying for your immigration fees or legal representation, though some employers do contribute to those costs. Clarifying exactly what support your employer is providing in writing before you begin the process is important.

Can my family come with me when I come to Canada on a work permit?

Yes. Your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children can accompany you. Depending on your work permit category, your spouse may be eligible for a spousal open work permit. Your children can attend school in Canada without a separate study permit at the primary and secondary level.

What happens if my employer withdraws the job offer after I apply for the work permit?

If the offer is withdrawn before your work permit is issued, your application will generally not be approved since the underlying offer is the basis for the permit. If the offer is withdrawn after you arrive in Canada, you are in the same position as someone who has been laid off on a work permit, which is a separate situation with its own set of options.
