Sponsoring a Child to Canada: Eligibility and Process in 2026

For many parents who immigrated to Canada, bringing their children to join them is the most important part of the journey. Canada’s family class allows citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their dependent children, and unlike some other sponsorship categories, there is no minimum income requirement for most child sponsorships. But eligibility depends on precise definitions, and one overlooked rule, the “excluded family member” rule, refuses many applications each year.

This guide explains how to sponsor a child to Canada in 2026: who counts as a dependent child, sponsor requirements, the documents you need, fees and the step-by-step process.

Quick Summary

Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor dependent children who are under 22 and not a spouse or common-law partner, or who are 22 or older and have depended on their parents since before age 22 because of a physical or mental condition. Most child sponsorships have no minimum income requirement. Children you did not declare and examine when you immigrated may be barred as excluded family members. Government fees include a $90 sponsorship fee and a $90 processing fee for a dependent child.

Who Counts as a Dependent Child?

A child qualifies as a dependent child if they are:

  • Under 22 years old and not a spouse or common-law partner; or
  • 22 or older, have depended on their parents for financial support since before age 22, and cannot support themselves because of a physical or mental condition.

The child can be your biological child or adopted child. Adoptions follow additional rules, and international adoptions may require separate processes, depending on the country and province.

Sponsor Requirements

  • You must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or registered Indian, at least 18 years old.
  • Permanent resident sponsors must live in Canada; citizen sponsors abroad must show they will live in Canada when the child arrives.
  • You must sign an undertaking to support your child. For a dependent child, the undertaking generally lasts 10 years or until the child turns 25, whichever comes first.
  • You must not be barred, for example because of unpaid immigration loans, certain criminal convictions or defaulting on previous sponsorships.

Most child sponsorships have no minimum income requirement, unless the dependent child has a dependent child of their own.

The Excluded Family Member Trap

This is the most important rule many parents miss. If you did not declare your child and have them examined by IRCC when you applied for permanent residence, the child may be considered an excluded family member. In that case, you generally cannot sponsor them under the family class later. Options may be limited to a humanitarian and compassionate application, which requires strong reasons.

If you are still in the process of immigrating, declare every child, even if they are not coming with you, and make sure they complete medical exams when IRCC asks.

Documents You Will Usually Need

  • Proof of your status in Canada.
  • The child’s birth certificate naming the parents, or adoption documents.
  • The child’s passport and photos.
  • Custody documents or consent from the other parent, where relevant.
  • Proof of dependency and medical evidence for children 22 or older.
  • Police certificates for children 18 or older, where required.

Step-by-Step: How to Sponsor Your Child

Step 1: Confirm eligibility

Check the child’s age, relationship and dependency status on the date IRCC receives your application, which is the date used to “lock in” the child’s age.

Step 2: Prepare the application package

Complete the sponsorship and permanent residence forms and gather documents.

Step 3: Pay fees

Pay the sponsorship fee and the dependent child processing fee online.

Step 4: Submit your application

Submit the complete application through IRCC’s online system.

Step 5: Medical exams and biometrics

The child completes a medical exam and gives biometrics if required.

Step 6: Decision and arrival

If approved, the child receives confirmation of permanent residence and becomes a permanent resident on arrival or after confirmation in Canada.

Fees in 2026

FeeAmount (CAD)
Sponsorship fee$90
Dependent child processing fee$90
Biometrics (if required)$85

Dependent children do not pay the right of permanent residence fee. These amounts reflect IRCC’s April 30, 2026 fee changes; check IRCC’s fee page before paying.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming an undeclared child can be sponsored later.
  • Applying after the child turns 22 without a qualifying dependency.
  • Missing custody or consent documents from the other parent.
  • Inconsistent names or dates across birth certificates and passports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can I sponsor as a dependent child in Canada?

You can sponsor a biological or adopted child who is under 22 and not a spouse or common-law partner, or who is 22 or older and has depended on you financially since before age 22 because of a physical or mental condition. The child’s age is locked in on the date IRCC receives your complete application.

Do I need a minimum income to sponsor my child?

Most child sponsorships do not require a minimum income. The exception is when the dependent child you are sponsoring has a dependent child of their own. You must still sign an undertaking to support the child for the required period and must not be barred from sponsoring.

Can I sponsor a child I did not declare when I immigrated?

Usually not. If you did not declare your child and have them examined when you applied for permanent residence, the child is generally considered an excluded family member and cannot be sponsored under the family class. A humanitarian and compassionate application may be possible in some cases.

How much does it cost to sponsor a child to Canada?

Government fees in 2026 include a $90 sponsorship fee and a $90 processing fee for a dependent child, plus $85 for biometrics if required. Dependent children do not pay the right of permanent residence fee. Check IRCC’s current fee list before you pay, because fees can change.
