Express Entry Tie-Breaking Rule Explained: Why Your Profile Date Matters in Every 2026 Express Entry Draw

On September 29, 2026, IRCC invited 2,000 Canadian Experience Class candidates with a minimum CRS score of 518. But not every candidate with exactly 518 points received an invitation. Only those who submitted their Express Entry profile before February 13, 2026, at 20:48:08 UTC made the cut. That timestamp is the tie-breaking rule in action, and it decided thousands of outcomes in 2026.

If your CRS score 2026 sits right at recent cut-offs, the tie-breaking rule can matter as much as an extra 10 points. This guide explains exactly how it works, what resets your place in line, and how to use it to your advantage.

Quick Summary

When several candidates share the lowest score that IRCC can invite in an Express Entry draw, IRCC ranks them by the date and time they submitted their profiles. Earlier submissions win. IRCC publishes the tie-breaking timestamp with every round. Updating your existing profile does not usually change your submission time, but letting a profile expire and creating a new one does. Submit an accurate profile as early as you are eligible.

What Is the Express Entry Tie-Breaking Rule?

In each round, IRCC decides how many Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to issue. It then invites candidates from highest score downward. Often, the last available invitations fall in the middle of a group of candidates who all share the same score. IRCC cannot invite all of them without exceeding the round size.

To decide who receives those last invitations, IRCC applies the tie-breaking rule: among candidates with the lowest qualifying score, it invites those who submitted their profiles earliest. IRCC publishes the exact date and time used as the cut-off, shown in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), on its rounds of invitations page.

A Real 2026 Example

Consider two candidates in the September 29, 2026 CEC round. Both have exactly 518 points. Priya submitted her profile on January 20, 2026. Daniel submitted his on March 2, 2026. Priya receives an ITA because her submission predates the February 13, 2026 tie-breaking timestamp. Daniel waits for a future round, even though his score matches hers exactly.

2026 drawCRS cut-offTie-breaking timestamp (UTC)
CEC, September 29518February 13, 2026, 20:48:08
PNP, September 14734August 29, 2026, 21:39:50
Physicians, September 3198August 6, 2026, 19:40:38
Senior managers, September 16389September 1, 2026, 23:05:13
Trades, October 1476May 28, 2026, 16:55:23

Notice how far back some timestamps reach. The CEC timestamp sat more than seven months before the draw, which tells you a large backlog of candidates had piled up at that score. A tie-breaking date close to the draw date, as in the PNP and senior manager rounds, signals a thinner pool at the cut-off.

What Counts as Your Submission Date?

IRCC uses the date and time you submitted your Express Entry profile into the pool. It does not use the date you first started filling it in, the date you took your language test, or the date your CRS score last changed. That distinction matters, because it means you can only secure an early position by completing and submitting your profile.

Does Updating My Profile Reset the Date?

In general, updating information in an existing profile, such as adding a new language result or another year of work experience, does not change your original submission time. Your score changes, but your place in line among equal scores stays the same. We still recommend checking IRCC guidance and your account, because system behaviour can change.

What Does Reset the Date?

Profiles remain valid for up to 12 months. If your profile expires, or if you withdraw it and create a new one, the new profile gets a new submission timestamp. Many candidates lose a strong position this way. Also note that IRCC does not allow duplicate profiles, so never create a second profile hoping to game the system.

How the Tie-Breaking Rule Affects Your Strategy

The rule rewards early, accurate action. If you meet eligibility requirements today, delaying your profile while you “wait for a better score” costs you queue position. You can always improve your score later and keep your original timestamp, as long as the profile stays active.

  • Submit your profile as soon as you are eligible and your information is accurate.
  • Track your profile’s expiry date and plan for renewal before it lapses.
  • Improve your score inside the same profile rather than starting over.
  • Compare your submission date with recent tie-breaking timestamps for your draw type.

Accuracy Comes First

Speed never justifies inaccurate claims. If you submit a profile with inflated points to “lock in” a date, and you later receive an ITA, IRCC will assess your documents against your claims. A mismatch can lead to refusal or a misrepresentation finding with a five-year bar. Submit early, but submit honestly.

Understanding the Express Entry Draw Schedule in 2026

IRCC does not publish an Express Entry draw schedule in advance. Throughout 2026, draws often arrived in clusters of PNP, CEC and category rounds within a few days. Because you cannot predict dates, the only factors you control are your score and your submission time. Both deserve attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the tie-breaking rule work in Express Entry?

When several candidates share the lowest score IRCC can invite in a round, IRCC ranks them by the date and time they submitted their Express Entry profiles. Candidates who submitted earlier receive invitations first. IRCC publishes the exact cut-off timestamp in UTC with each round, so you can compare it with your own submission date.

Does updating my Express Entry profile change my tie-breaking date?

Generally, no. Updating details in an active profile, such as new test results or extra work experience, changes your score but not your original submission time. Creating a new profile after expiry or withdrawal gives you a new timestamp. Check IRCC guidance and your account details if you are unsure.

Where can I find the tie-breaking timestamp for each draw?

IRCC publishes the tie-breaking rule on its Express Entry rounds of invitations page on Canada.ca, alongside the draw date, number of invitations, program or category, and minimum CRS score. The timestamp appears in Coordinated Universal Time, so convert it to your local time zone when comparing it with your profile submission date.

Should I wait to improve my score before submitting my profile?

Usually not, if you already meet eligibility requirements. Submitting early secures your place for tie-breaking purposes, and you can update your score afterwards within the same profile. The exception is when your current information is incomplete or uncertain. Accuracy always comes before speed, so confirm your claims first.
