How Language Test Scores Affect Your CRS Points in 2026 (IELTS, CELPIP, PTE Core, TEF and TCF)

A single applicant who moves from CLB 8 to CLB 9 in all four abilities can gain roughly 80 CRS points without changing anything else. No other factor in Express Entry offers that kind of return for a few months of focused preparation. That is why language results sit at the heart of every competitive CRS score 2026.

This guide explains which tests IRCC accepts, how scores convert to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels, how many points each level earns, and where the hidden transferability points come from.

Quick Summary

IRCC accepts IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core for English, and TEF Canada and TCF Canada for French. Results convert to CLB (English) or NCLC (French) levels and stay valid for two years. A single applicant earns up to 136 points for first-language ability, plus up to 50 transferability points each for education and foreign experience when combined with CLB 9. French at NCLC 7 or higher adds 25 to 50 more points.

Which Language Tests Does IRCC Accept?

For Express Entry, IRCC accepts five tests. Your results must be less than two years old on the day you submit your profile and on the day you submit your permanent residence application.

How Scores Convert to CLB Levels

IRCC converts each ability separately: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Your lowest ability often determines which transferability tier you reach, so a single weak skill can cost dozens of points. Below is the IELTS General Training conversion for key levels (verify against IRCC’s current equivalency chart).

CLB levelListeningReadingWritingSpeaking
CLB 76.06.06.06.0
CLB 87.56.56.56.5
CLB 98.07.07.07.0
CLB 108.58.07.57.5

CELPIP-General maps directly: a CELPIP score of 9 in an ability equals CLB 9. For PTE Core, TEF Canada and TCF Canada, check IRCC’s official equivalency charts, since score ranges differ by ability.

Core Points for Your First Official Language

CLB 4 or 566
CLB 698
CLB 71716
CLB 82322
CLB 93129
CLB 10 or more3432

Multiply by four abilities for your total. A single applicant at CLB 9 across the board earns 124 points; at CLB 10, 136 points. The jump from CLB 8 (92 points) to CLB 9 (124 points) alone adds 32 core points.

The Hidden Gains: Skill Transferability

Language also drives two transferability combinations, each worth up to 50 points:

  • Education plus language: a post-secondary credential with CLB 7 or higher earns 13 to 25 points; with CLB 9 or higher in all four abilities, 25 to 50 points.
  • Foreign work experience plus language: one or two years with CLB 7 earns 13 points, rising to 25 at CLB 9; three or more years earns 25 at CLB 7 and 50 at CLB 9.

This is why CLB 9 acts as a turning point. A single applicant with two or more credentials and three years of foreign experience who moves from CLB 8 to CLB 9 gains 32 core points plus 25 education-language points plus 25 foreign-work-language points, about 82 points in total. Transferability is capped at 100 points overall.

French: Second Language Points and Bonus Points

French offers three separate benefits. As a second official language, it can add up to 24 points for a single applicant. At NCLC 7 or higher in all four abilities, it adds 25 additional points, or 50 if you also hold CLB 5 or higher in English. It also opens French-language category draws, which delivered roughly 30,500 invitations in the first half of 2026.

Minimum Language Requirements by Program

Points matter, but you also need to meet minimums. The Federal Skilled Worker Program requires CLB 7 in all abilities. The Canadian Experience Class requires CLB 7 for TEER 0 or 1 jobs and CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3 jobs. The Federal Skilled Trades Program requires CLB 5 for speaking and listening and CLB 4 for reading and writing.

Test-Taking Strategy That Protects Your Score

  • Take a diagnostic test to find your weakest ability before booking.
  • Choose the test format that suits you; many candidates find computer-based tests easier for writing.
  • Plan for the two-year validity window so results do not expire mid-application.
  • Update your Express Entry profile the day you receive new results.

Express Entry for Indian Applicants 2026: A Language Note

India remains one of the largest source countries for Express Entry. Many Indian applicants hold strong degrees and foreign experience but stall at CLB 8 in reading or writing. For this group, targeted preparation in the weakest ability often unlocks the transferability tiers that make the biggest difference.

Policy Watch

IRCC’s 2026 reform proposals included a CLB/NCLC 6 minimum for a merged program and possible removal of French bonus points. Language points would likely remain central, but confirm current rules on Canada.ca before you plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many CRS points does IELTS give?

IELTS itself does not give points; IRCC converts your IELTS General Training results to CLB levels and awards points per ability. A single applicant earns up to 34 points per ability, or 136 total, at CLB 10. Strong results also unlock up to 100 transferability points when combined with education and foreign work experience.

What IELTS score do I need for CLB 9?

For IELTS General Training, CLB 9 generally requires 8.0 in listening and 7.0 in reading, writing and speaking. Each ability converts separately, so you need all four at those levels to reach the higher transferability tiers. Confirm the current conversion on IRCC’s official equivalency chart before you book or plan.

Is PTE Core accepted for Express Entry?

Yes. IRCC accepts PTE Core for English proficiency in Express Entry. PTE Academic is not accepted for this purpose. As with other tests, results must be less than two years old, and IRCC converts each ability to a CLB level using its own equivalency chart.

How long are language test results valid for Express Entry?

Language test results remain valid for two years from the test result date. They must be valid when you create your profile and when you submit your permanent residence application after an ITA. If your results will expire soon, plan a retest early so your profile stays active and accurate.

Can French really boost my CRS score?

Yes. NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities adds 25 additional points, or 50 if your English sits at CLB 5 or higher in all abilities. French can also add second-language points and qualifies you for French-language category draws, which carried some of the lowest cut-offs in 2026.
